Drive Safe Tree at the Festival of Lights
Each year, we create our Drive Safe Tree display at the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights. With the help of Preventionfocus and the Mental Health Advocates of WNY (formerly Mental Health Association of Erie County) and the generosity from Dave Gordon, owner of Dave’s Christmas it has been transformed into the Drive Safe Forest!
The Drive Safe Tree is decorated with hundreds of ornaments created by students from all over Western New York. Each ornament represents a child’s wish that adults refrain from driving while impaired by alcohol, prescription medications, or any other drugs this holiday season.
This project began several years ago in conjunction with 3D Month (National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month).
In December 2015 former President Barack Obama made a Proclamation stating that December is now National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. Impaired driving includes distracted driving, drugged driving, and drunk driving.
Traffic fatalities that involve impaired drivers increase significantly during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday periods, which is why it is important we stress the anti-drinking and driving message during this time.
