The LIT2 Summer Program was filled with over 40 youth leaders, some prior Leaders In Training and others nominated by their schools based on the leadership skills they exhibited. As students throughout the Buffalo School District they were able to come together as leaders from their respective schools and work along side new leaders they're to meet in their new high schools, thus creating early friendships and connections before even the first day of school. During the five week summer program leaders where able to express themselves through fun packed curriculum in Economics for Success, Too Good for Violence, Math, ELA, and Student Voice. Each session was guided based on the leaders' own interest in career opportunities, student concerns, educational goals and the like.
Each week our leaders' hard work was rewarded with mid-week catered lunch and a Friday field trip to help celebrate the job well done. The field trips were designed to give the leaders an opportunity to explore WNY. They visited Niagara Falls, The Lockport Locks and Cave Tour, Canal side, and Holiday Valley Aerial Park.
Though we set high standards for our leaders they provided their best efforts to meet them and it showed as the weeks progressed leaving us with a bittersweet end of Summer Program. We will miss our first LIT2 group to complete Summer Program but we are excited to see what they will accomplish come their Freshmen year as leaders.
This program was created in partnership with the Independent Health Foundation and funded through Senator Chris Jacobs Office, The Cullen Foundation and Oishei Foundation.
